Self-Unloaders

Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin

Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway

MV Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin is one on Canada Steamship Line’s self-unloading vessels. She was built in 1973 and converted to a self-unloader in 2003. Her home port is St. Catharines.

The equipment on board consists of hoppered holds with 35-degree slopes and hydraulically operated roller track gates. Two tunnel conveyors run the length of the vessel and feed two cross conveyors that run athwartship.

A single loop belt elevating system raises the material to the main deck and onto the vessel’s unloading boom. Self-contained PC workstations connected to a network permit remote control and automation of both the unloading and ballast systems.

MV Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin is fitted with a dust covering and a fixed spill tray on the unloading boom. The unloading tunnel is ventilated for coal and is fully explosion-proof. Tunnel gates are operated by remote control.

MV Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin is wholly owned and operated by CSL.
